Reopening 2020

Back to school 2020

Updates as of August 7

Class Lists

Class lists are being finalized between in-person and the Remote Learning Academy (RLA) for every grade, from Young Explorers to 8th grade.Young Explorers and the elementary schools will be sending notifications to parents via email of teacher assignments for every student, in-person or for the Remote Learning Academy, on the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 14. Junior high schedules for both in-person and remote learning will be ready the week of Aug. 17. Specific details for NBJH schedule and school supply pickup will be forthcoming. Student iPads for RLA students will be included in the planned pick-up time, while in-person students will receive their iPads upon their return to school on August 24.

Bus routes are also being finalized. Route information will be sent to parents as soon as it is ready.

Back-to-School Events

We are also working on Meet the Teacher for grades K-5, which will be held by appointment at the school on Friday, Aug. 21 for in-person learners and remotely for Remote Learning Academy students. For in-person learners, each student can be accompanied by one caregiver to meet their teacher. In order to protect the health and safety of everyone in the building, siblings and other members of the family will not be permitted. Parents will receive additional information after teacher assignments are released. Young Explorers families will be receiving separate information regarding the beginning of the year activities by August 14.

The district is purchasing a system for health check self-certification. Every morning, parents whose children are attending in-person will be required to complete a short form about each child’s health status. We are planning to pilot the system for Meet the Teacher.

As a reminder, please note the travel restrictions that Cook County Department of Public Health has implemented. Any student who travels to a state on the must quarantine 14 days before attending school.  The first day of school is August 24, so as long as a student is back in the state by August 10, school attendance can begin on August 24.  Specifics with a link to updates are included in the updated FAQ

Curriculum Night will be held remotely on Aug. 27 for elementary grades and Sept. 2 for NBJH. Details will follow. Young Explorers will have curriculum night Sept. 9.

District 28 Reopening Plan 2020

Superintendent Dr. Larry Hewitt presented the district's reopening plan to the community on July 17, 2020.

This plan will provide parents with the option of either full-time in-person learning or full-time remote learning.  We feel this choice-based approach will provide important flexibility for families.  We continue to monitor information on the pandemic and guidance from the State of Illinois, either of which could result in adjustments to the draft plan at any time.   View the video below for complete details provided by Dr. Hewitt. Download the text version of the slide presentation for an overview.
