Number Talks in Mrs. O'Brien's roomHow can 10 minutes a day make students stronger mathematicians? An instructional strategy being implemented across grades K-5 this year is intended to do just that. Number Talks take 10-15 minutes a day and help students build computational skills, reinforce number sense and work on the habits of mind that make them stronger mathematicians and problem-solvers. Number talks don’t replace other instruction, but they are a powerful complement to it. They get all students involved, help them strengthen fluency, intuition, and mental math strategies, improve students’ ability to explain and critique solutions, and allow teachers a valuable window into their students’ thinking.
