Anna Huelke

Northbrook Junior High band student Anna Huelke is among the ten exceptional musicians selected from 200 who recently competed in the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory’s 2019 Walgreens National Concerto Competition.

Students from elementary through 12th grade competed in the competition Dec. 28 and 30 at Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall and the MYAC Center at Fort Sheridan in Highwood, IL. Anna is an 8th grade home-schooled student who participates in the band program at Northbrook Junior High and also studies both flute and piano privately.

Anna won the ‘other instrument’ category of the junior division for her performance of “Devienne: Flute Concerto No.7 in E Minor.” She will be among ten young musicians who will perform their winning piece at the Walgreen Winners Recital at 5 p.m. Jan. 19 at Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall.

"It's really exciting,” said Anna, who has been playing flute for four years and worked on perfecting her piece for two months. Piano was her first instrumen, which she began playing at age 7.
“(The flute) is a beautiful instrument and you can play beautiful pieces on it,” she said.

Anna was also selected to play first chair in the All-Illinois Junior Band in 2019.
