34 years at District 28

Lisa Nordland has spent much of her life in District 28. Ms. Nordland grew up in Northbrook, attending Greenbriar, NBJH and Glenbrook North. She returned to Northbrook as a kindergarten aide for a year, then taught first grade for many years, and ended her career teaching fourth grade.

Advice to New Teachers

You are not alone and you are not expected to know all there is to know about your school, district, and position. When people offer to help, let them. They are being sincere. And always remain flexible.

Best Memory

After 35 years, my most memorable moment goes all the way back to Texas when I taught mostly low income students in an otherwise well off district. I had a boy who came from a large family. All of his older siblings dropped out of school before graduating. No one expected much from him but he knew I believed in him. We had spent a lot of time together for two years. He stood at my door after our last class together, yelled out “Lisa” to get my attention, looked me in the eyes and said “thank you.” For some reason that thank you has always meant a great deal to me and I often wonder where he is today.

Retirement Plans

Next year I am going to take advantage of last minute travel deals and avoid all winter/spring break crowds!
