Advice for first-year teachers

Enjoy every moment of your time with your students, and be respectful of the importance the school experience plays in their lives.  At the end of your career, those classroom memories will be the ones that matter.

Favorite memory

One of the many profound memories I carry with me was of a student I had while I was a new teacher working in the Chicago Public Schools.  I noticed this student was coming to school most days in wet clothes.  When I asked him about it, he advised he had only one winter outfit and his mom was too busy, so he was washing his clothes in the bathtub each evening.  It was so important to him that he come to school each day, that he came in clothes that were still wet.  I think it was then that I began to realize how very important what we do each day is to the children in our classrooms, in so many ways.

Inspiration

I would like to think I have been inspired by each and every student I have had the opportunity to teach. I could not be more grateful for the positive, and challenging, experiences I have had.

Next chapter

Our next adventure will include travel, once this challenging time passes, kayaking near our home in Florida, and spending much-needed time with our children and grandchildren.
