Noah Elmasry is one of 100 students in the state to qualify for the National Geographic Illinois State GeoBee on March 29.

He will be competing at Heartland Community College in Normal, IL for a $1,000 cash prize and trip to Washington D.C. for the national championship.

This is the third year in a row that a Northbrook Junior High student has qualified for the state event. Noah had to score in the top 100 in the state on the National Geographic Society online test after winning the school GeoBee, which was held in November.

“We travel a lot and it inspired me to learn more about the world,” Noah said. He has traveled with his parents and little sister to Canada, Florida, New York and the Netherlands.

To prepare, Noah says he is reviewing the study materials provided online by National Geographic.

“It’s more than memorizing. You have to learn about the cultures too,” he said.

All that studying may have inspired some future travel plans. He says he’d like to visit California and maybe the country that he knew enough about to win the school GeoBee with the question: “What city in France holds a film festival?” His correct response, “Cannes,” won him the school GeoBee medal from a field of 15 contestants.
