St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital identified the 2017 Young Explorers Trike-A-thon as the 23rd biggest fund-raiser for the hospital in 2017.

The Trike-A-Thon was held on May 15 and raised $10,123.  The Young Explorers Early Childhood program is housed at Westmoor School and operates a blended program for special needs, at-risk and typically developing children ages 3 through kindergarten.

This is the second year Young Explorers have participated in the Trike-A-Thon as part of the service learning curriculum. In 2016, after raising $7,594, the program ranked the 38th most successful Trike-a-Thon of the year in the nation.

“As a program, we feel that promoting service learning enhances their ability to develop empathy and a sense of social responsibility. As students engage in service learning activities, they are contributing to their school, community and learning how they can help to create change/make an impact in the lives of others,” said Katey Gurwin, social worker who helped organize the project.
