District 28 graduated 210 students of the Northbrook Junior High Class of 2018 at Glenbrook North High School on June 4.

Board President Tracy Katz Muhl welcomed friends and family gathered in the auditorium to celebrate the graduates’ elementary years. Two awards were presented at the ceremony. Morissa Lambert received the Northbrook Rotary Volunteer Service Award from Superintendent Larry Hewitt for extraordinary work in the spirit of volunteerism and the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”

Four students were chosen by the teaching staff for the American Legion Citizenship Award as best representing the six character qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. Caden Deutsch and Sam Saffar received Honorable Mention, and Abby Burnham and Morissa Lambert received Distinguished Achievement.

Student speaker Kelly Henrikson addressed her classmates in her speech titled “Ready or Not!”

“I am here now to tell you to savor the days to come. And not to let them slip away from you. High school is what you make of it. So make this the best four years of your life. Try new things, and be different than everyone around you,” she said.

Student Claire Chang likened their journey through school to being an astronaut preparing to lift off in her poem, “Reaching New Horizons.”

“With hesitant excitement, we will all step forward, board the rocket, and secure the harness. Take a moment to just breathe,” she said.

The graduation orchestra performed the processional and recessional while the graduation concert choir performed “The Star Spangled Banner” and  “No Day But Today.”

In addressing the graduates, Dr. Larry Hewitt said, “As your life’s journey continues, may each of you discover your unique purpose and, in so doing, live a life of relevance and significance, so that those around you will be blessed simply because of the incredible person you’ve become.”

Principal Dr.  Scott Meek likened the student’s years in elementary school to growing in a garden.

“Wow us with your splendor. Inspire us with your grit and determination. Reassure us with your desire to stand out like no other. Your growing season has only just begun…you have the ability to reach heights that are unimaginable,” he said.
